Weather
Guatemala, ‘the land of eternal spring’, boasts an average temperature of 75°F year round, although with variations in the more mountainous regions of the country. We have only two seasons, Summer and Winter with the rainy season occurring during the winter months of May to October, however, rains are very moderate and not all day or every day like some other tropical countries. Language
Spanish is the official language although English is also spoken in many tourist areas. In rural areas the indigenous population still speaks more than 20 different Indian dialects.

Population
The current population figure for Guatemala is approximately 14 million, made up of a mix of Indigenous, Ladino and Garifuna people, residing in different areas of the country.

Taxes
All services and goods are subject to 12% Tax.

Currency Exchange
The Quetzal is the local currency, named after our national bird. Check your local bank for current exchange rates.

Credit Cards and Traveler’s Cheques
Most international credit cards are accepted in both Guatemala City and Antigua. It is also possible to exchange US Dollars and Travelers Cheques, but generally local currency is preferred.

Entry Requirements
For entry into Guatemala, you require both a passport and visa. Since regulations change please confirm details with your travel agent before departure.

Departure Tax
When leaving the country, each person is required to pay a departure tax of US $30.

Communications
A direct dial telephone service is readily available together with Internet, fax, cable, radio and television services.

Electricity / Voltage
110 Volt AC. is found throughout the country. Don’t forget an adapter for your European style plugs.

Water
It is advisable to drink only purified water during your stay in Guatemala, which is both inexpensive and available in all stores.

Clothing
We recommend you bring spring clothing, e.g. jeans, cotton shirts, and a sweater or jacket for the cooler evenings. We also advise comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses and a hat for the afternoon’s activities.

Tipping
Generally, a 10% tip is appropriate when dining in restaurants.

Time Zone
Guatemala is in the Central Standard time zone and does not observe daylight-saving time.

Government
Guatemala is a democratic republic with elections held every four years.
